The distillery has an annual production capacity of just over two million litres and is currently owned by Whyte & Mackay, who took control in 1993.

Production restarted in 1963 and it has been operating ever since. It was closed for a long period between 19, at which point it was rebuilt using a design by renowned post-War distillery architect William Delmé-Evans. It was originally called the Small Isles distillery after the numerous islands located in Craighouse Bay, which the distillery sits on and overlooks. The Jura distillery is located on the Hebredean isle of Jura and was founded in 1810 by Archibald Campbell. The two pockets of stock have then been married together to produce the final whisky. The whiskies involved in this 18 years old have followed two different paths - regular unpeated spirit has matured in ex-bourbon casks before a period of finishing in ex-red wine barriques sourced from Bordeaux in France, while rarer peated spirit (which is only made at the distillery for one month each year) has been matured solely in ex-bourbon casks.

The range was revamped in 2018 and this 18 years old is joined by other age statements at 10, 12 and 21 years old plus three other 'no age statement' expressions - the French Oak, Journey and Seven Wood. ‘Tide’ is the more oily of the two, but ‘Time’ with its peaty influence has more interest for me I think.This whisky forms part of the core range from the island distillery of Jura. These 21’s are no exception to that rule, they’re tasty, oily, and well presented drams.

Overall Thoughts: I’ve long been a fan of older Juras, it seems to me to be a whisky that gets much better with age and shines once over 20. Thoughts: A gentle, well aged, dram that has plenty of flavour and life left in it. Finish: On the finish there’s a really fresh element that makes it stand out and shine, possibly the effect from the fresh oak casks. Sweet and fruity, yet mellow and rounded. It’s kind of creamy with hints of chocolate. Slight hints of smoke, probably from cask char. Gentle at first but with wood spices slowly building.
